Everybody loves to be a show off but how many students can say their teacher actually asked them to be a show off? Well that is exactly what happened to Bow (Apirata) Kuantana, a grade 12 student from Thailand who is attending Strathmore High School.
Her art teacher, Brandy Roberts, recognizing the accomplishments of her talented students, helped them apply to have their artwork showcased in the Alberta College of Art + Design 2013-2014 ACAD SHOW OFF! This is an annual juried exhibition of high school students’ best ideas in art and design and exhibits creations from across Alberta, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Bow’s work was selected to be included in the SHOW OFF exhibition at the nationally recognized Illingworth Kerr Gallery at ACAD from April 12-19.
On April 12 Bow, along with a few other students from the Strathmore Dorm, journeyed into Calgary for a day of fun activities which included stopping at SHOW OFF so Bow could witness firsthand her work of art on public display. Roberts also took in the opening of the exhibition “...the work was phenomenal…it is truly impressive to see the talent these young people possess”.
“Bow has also received quite a bit of notice at the school”, says Roberts. Everyone inquires about her work when it’s on display and another teacher, Mrs. Peterson, commissioned her to do four charcoal drawings of Inuit children which she had matted and framed”.
Bow intends to pursue a career in art by studying in Europe after she graduates, and judging by her first public exhibit she will be a huge success in the art world.
Golden Hills International congratulates Bow and is very proud of her accomplishments!
