Award winning international students at DVSS

Graduation is a proud moment for any student, but it is a particularly special day for international students. It is the culmination of hard work at school in a new country, the achievement of transitioning from their native schooling to a new education system and many do this while learning English at the same time.

This year at Drumheller Valley Secondary School three international graduates were also recognized for their hard work and community contributions:



Jane Leung

AndersonDrugs/Freson Brothers Pharmacy Award

This award is given to the student who has been a good student at DVSS and will be attending medical program in university.

Jane will be attending the University of Toronto majoring in Science. After getting Bachelor of Science degree, she will go to dentistry school to become a dentist.


Yonathan Sastroutomo

International Student Community Involvement Award,Chinook Credit Union, Drumheller Branch

This award is given to the International student who has been a good student at DVSS and was involved in school and community and/or has volunteered with youth.

Yonathan will be attending Red Deer College. While attending DVSS he was a very active student.

School extra-curricular activities:

  1. part of the year book club as a photographer and designer
  2. a member of the leadership conference as a cameraman and handbook designer and helps with the stage design
  3. a member of junior high school band where he was a teaching assistant helping students learn how to play musical instruments
  4. a member of the Senior Diner where he was helping in the kitchen and playing music with his band
  5. a member of the Fine Arts Night Group where he participates in choir, drama, shows etc.

Community activities:

  1. a member of the music team at church where he plays the saxophone
  2. a member of the Sunshine Lodge (senior house) where he volunteers playing games and music to entertain the seniors
  3. a photographer and leader for bible study for kids at church


Whitney Fondja

TKD Catering Bursary

This bursary is in recognition of the International Student that provided the greatest support in the day to day operation of the cafeteria.

Whitney plans to attend Victoria University majoring in Biology, and then attend grad school. While at grad school she will apply for her permanent residency to be a Canadian citizen. She plans to pursue medical school after that. While working towards her degree she plans to volunteer at a forensic lab.
