In an effort to ease international students' transition to school at Golden Hills and life in Canada, a new student orientation program has been added to the Program. On September 9, 2017 international students in grades 7-12 from all Golden Hills' schools hopped onto buses and geared up for a fun-filled day.
It was a great opportunity for students attending our different schools to get acquainted with each other and share their thoughts and feelings about being a student in Canada. The orientation is also designed to integrate students into academic, community and social life at Golden Hill. To help with this, team members from the International Program introduced themselves and gave a brief explanation about their role in helping to make students successful at Golden Hills.
Upon arrival, students received Golden Hills International t-shirts that were designed by last year's Japanese international student Akiko Ishimoto who attended Drumheller Valley Secondary School. Akiko said her design "...represents a dedication and great support of the GHSD International Program, as well as the countless connections such as friendships and relationships with their host families that international students establish during their study abroad experience." This is a true representation of what awaits students at Golden Hills International.
There were several guest speakers for the day including the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society to talk about adjusting to new lives in Canada and laws and rights as international students, Adam Pirie from our International team gave students helpful information on how to be successful in school and Sean Hardman from Guard.Me Insurance briefed students on their health insurance. Best of all, ten returning international students were brave enough to stand in front of the entire crowd and answer questions about their experience as an international student. Snacks and games were interspersed throughout the day to keep things fun and energized.
The day was a huge success with students asking "when can we do it again?!!"
