Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN is an extra-curricular activity where students typically roleplay delegates to the United Nations and simulate UN committees. At Strathmore High School, teacher Mark Schweitzer has been running the club which is made up of an exciting mix of four international students and four local students.
The group meets every Wednesday after school to discuss global issues that are currently being discussed at the UN and involves substantial researching, public speaking, debating and writings skills as well as critical thinking, teamwork and leadership abilities.
On October 21 and 22 five members of the group along with their teacher traveled to Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary where they joined over 500 other students from the Calgary area. Our Strathmore students were randomly assigned Ukraine and Luxembourg to represent as delegates. With teacher Mark's guidance, they researched their countries thoroughly to prepare them for discussion, debate, and response to a mock crisis. During this mock session, students also had the opportunity to practice their "diplomacy" including rules of engagement, public speaking, and debate.
